Exactly. He couldn't change. No matter how much some people might have wished him to.
It is an age-old story. How many people have gone for the flash of a heated and quick romance, only to be hurt when the masks come off later and they discover that they are stuck with someone very different than they thought? That is what Austen was trying to show. She said, through Henry: Beware the quick change artist, he might change back just as quickly!
