] It's a bit off topic but as a confirmed B'ite I often think that if Fanny had married Crawford she would have ended up like Helen Graham in "Tennant of Wildfell Hall" - a husband with nil inner resources who scoffed at her quiet seriousness etc.

I think this is a good point.
Do people really believe that Henry Crawford would have continued to be true to Fanny year after year? I simply can't believe it. He might have convinced himself to ignore other women for a time, but a tiger doesn't change its stripes. Within a year or two he would have been taking mistresses.
Fanny was a very observant woman who understood everything going on at Mansfield Park, even if whe was powerless to affect anything that happened. She would have learned that her husband had relations with other women, and he probably would have spent less and less time with her--it would have destroyed her life. She simply could not have married him!
