Though I do love the romance (in the modern sense of the word) in Jane Austen's novels, I do not think she was a writer of romances. I tend to believe what she said about her own writing:

"I could no more write a romance than an epic poem. No, I must keep to my own style and go my own way; and though I may never succeed again in that, I am totally convinced that I should fail in any other."

I do think of all her works as wonderfully subtle satires, yet, in addition to this fine quality, I also read them for the guaranteed happy ending. So I guess I do like the relationships part of her works, though I do not think of the novels as romances.
