Sharpe is a soldier in the Napoleonic era (also known as the Regency--JA's time). He starts out as an enlisted private, but manages to make the leap to the officers corp at a time when that was extremely rare. He ends up at Waterloo as a Leutenant Colonel. The 14 books are written by Bernard Cornwell, and most of them have been made into TV movies which are shown in the US on Masterpiece Theater.
