If you have been paying attention (and seeing how it is plastered on about every board) you would see that people's opinions on the rightful end to MP are just about split down the middle (or else leaning toward Crawfordism :) he he he!)
If I was to write a book that would have such a war-like uproar I would have at least written an alternative ending. An author does not set out to have half their readers debating and battling over who should get who. A real romantic author should desire at least satisfaction once a reader is finished, instead of shock and disbelief of what happened in the last forty pages.
Maybe women were too shy to speak up for what they believed in then, but over the years I am sure the same split has occurred, and if JA was a 90's author she would have done something....
