] ] seriously, i find it hard to believe that emma would stay single - even considering the good reasons you give for that possibility - if for no other reason than "emma woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and a happy disposition...". and i definitely don't see her "happy disposition" becoming like miss bates in 20 years time, though, as we've said, she got a terrifying premonition of the POSSIBILITIES at box hill(open mouth, insert foot). what do you say to a mr. martin prototype, except a little higher up the social scale, as a last resort for her? and yes, she'd convince herself that she was in love.
] If we are talking alternative endings for fictional characters, I suppose your suggestion has some merit. ;-) But, I don't imagine an unmarried Emma becoming a Miss Bates -- more a kinder, gentler Mrs Elton, I think, trying to run peoples' lives!
] ] as for my courtship of kb, i'm still playing with my riddles ;-)
] LOL!

As long as we're allowed to invent new characters, perhaps after the death of her father, Emma will spend more time with Isabella--perhaps even traveling to London--and meet more gentlemen. Surely one of them would do (Perhaps Col. Fitzwilliam from P&P?). ;-)
