] This is also a scene where he seems to be telling Emma that he knows that she (Emma) knows about his secret already (which of course she doesn't). It is a wonderful scene to read -- so well-written, and on so many different levels.

I agree - I think that Frank was alluding to his secret engagement to Jane with the feeling that Emma was already aware of the truth. And I feel that Emma mistakenly took his words as an expression of intense affection for her.
