] I imagine that, as long as there were people around her that were single so that she could attempt to match them up, Emma would never be completely bored, but apart from that, I don't see Emma as being at all happy with her situation. Life would be passing her by, and I think she would be fully aware of it. I can't begin to imagine how she would cope if Mr Knightley married another woman (though, if he does love her as much as he is supposed to, I can't see that happening!) I think that, when her father dies, and she is left as good as alone, her entire situation would hit home very harshly, and she wouldn't be at all happy - her disposition wouldn't allow for a solitary life!

On a similar subject -- did anyone read that trash "Poor Emma" by Reginald Hill? In it Emma and Knightley are an old married couple. Knightley is a fat and boring old politician and completely indifferent when it comes to his wife. Emma doesn't seem to mind. And in the end they kill of Mr. Knighltey -- only for Emma to find out afterwards that she is pregnant! What a world! Now opponents of Billington will even agree that her "attempt" could be considered for a pulitizer in comparison to this!
