From the book (on second, third, etc. readings) I believe he was about to confess his engagement to Jane. He is so upset about having to leave Highbury, about cancelling the ball, about not seeing Jane for an indeterminate time -- I think his emotions were overwhelming him, and he felt the need of a friendly ear. This is also a scene where he seems to be telling Emma that he knows that she (Emma) knows about his secret already (which of course she doesn't). It is a wonderful scene to read -- so well-written, and on so many different levels.
