I don't think Emma3 is as bad as that. I certainly prefer Emma2 way over Emma3, but, as kathy says, it is far from depressing. I agree with you about MS's Mr Knightley - it is very difficult to find him very agreeable, as he is meant to be - MS plays him almost to the extent of being very disagreeable! Kate Beckinsale's Emma was perhaps a little more 'stuck-up' than she really should be, but I quite enjoyed her performance. Her teary "I love him! I've always loved him! Oh, what have I done!?" scene is excellent! It is a great indicator of her feelings. but in the same way, Paltrow's Emma's distress over the Knightley/Harriet thing is also very good. It shows just how wretched she feels. And I think Jeremy Northam has hit just the right note with Mr Knightley - he's just like Emma's big brother, but not quite, and the expressions on his face every time Frank Churchill is mentioned are priceless, especially at the Cole's Party scene (when Frank joins Emma singing) and the scene in the flower house when Emma says (about Jane Fairfax) "She wouldn't tell me anything about Frank Churchill!" I love the look he gives at that!

Anyway, overall, I do like Emma2 better than Emma3 (and I've seen each version about the same amount of times - heaps!), but I don't think Emma3 nearly so bad as you say. but hey! We're all entitled to our own opinions, so I'm far from cruelly putting yours down!
