I'm not so sure what I think about whether Knightley would have been chaste. Just because he's older doesn't mean he's been in love before, and maybe he didn't want to indulge in sex without love. I'm not enough of a historian to know if celebacy was fairly common in unmarried men.

At any rate, here's a GREAT quote from Jeremy Northam on this subject:
