] ] To Anyone Out There: When you read Emma for the first time, did you suspect the truth about Frank and Jane? Or were you "doomed to blindness" like Emma. I'm interested to know. I can't remember at all my own degree of cleverness but someone probably spoiled it for me by telling me the plot anyway.

I suspected from the very first when frank was telling
emma that he thought janes complexion to pale and playing her down far too vigourously. a gentleman just wouldn't say those things unless he were trying to cover up his affections. I also suspected that harriet would marry mr martin after all. and I suspected that emma loved mr knightly by how unreasonably vexed she was at the idea of his marrage to anyone else, but I did not think that it would go as far as marrage between them. the difference in age was just to much for me to believe, but that is just my
20th century sensabilitys kicking in I suppose.
