] I've always thought that Emma was designed with the feelings and troubles of the rich in mind. In a way, it's more difficult to make an intelligent drama out of the lives of the wealthy and content (especially when said drama is infused with a healthy dose of humor). Finally, Austen gives heroine time to a young woman who is both rich and popular - and puts her into a situation deep enough to produce the author's most poignant work!

kali - yes, YES, and YESSS! makes me want to go out and read some more ja criticism - along with more ja, of course. if you're not careful, you'll make me THINK.
