lorraine's probably right, but i think the aforementioned mssr. davies might have allowed for other interpretations(some interesting ones have been mentioned here). as to your explanations, kathy, i would sooner believe the second, i.e., that the scene says "the end" gracefully, than believe it was an attempt to show that emma wasn't lying. as i have mentioned before, i kind of like to allow the possibility that it shows some ingenuity(romantic intrigue) by the knightley brothers to get emma to church by october - even though i know it isn't explicit and is not in strict chronological sequence. ref. the last few paragraphs of the book.________
