] Ann: I hate the fact that a bit of deafness mentioned by JA was turned into near senility by both productions. Just because she has some trouble hearing--though she always understands Jane--does not mean that she is an unaware idiot! This really does bug me.

Ann, I agree with you that it was a cheap shot to get laughs out of Mrs. Bates's deafness. It really grated on my husband, who uses hearing aids and is perhaps more tuned into this than many others (though not you, clearly!)
