] ] It bothers me that both Emma2 and Emma3 made Mrs. Bates into a deaf idiot. In the book she is perfectly capable of carrying on a conversation, but both screenplays made her into almost a non-person.

I disagree about Mr. Woodhouse. I thought he seemed to have a bit more of a sense of his own comic appearance in Emma2. Maybe not true to the book, but I thought this made him more real to me. Ex., his reactions (hand salutes?) to both Emma and Mr. K in the first scene all together when Emma and K are sparring over her attentions to Mr. Elton, also his smile after Emma corrects him with "Good night, Mrs. Weston, Mr. Weston" "She so obviously wanted to stay"
I just got the feeling not that he meant his words any less than in the book or other adaptations, just that he more realized his position was sweet yet unrealistic.
