I liked Emma1 very much. John Carson seemed to get younger and younger as the film progressed, though he didn't seem ancient in the first place. Doran Godwin's speech and mannerisms were all very "proper," and at times arch to the point of stiffness, but in general, I thought her very poised and charming. I could tell that Gwyneth Paltrow had observed Godwin's portrayal and incorporated some of her more endearing reactions. In addition, I thought that Constanduros' nymphomaniacal Mrs. Elton was right on.
The claustrophobic fluorescence of the studio lighting did bug, however, and the length was indeed a test of stamina. I was also bewildered by the omission of the alphabets scene, considering the length and exhaustive nature of the screenplay.
As far as a "new" version of Emma, I too heard from someone that another adaptation was in the works. I don't know who is/was supposed to be producing it...and I can't be sure that the rumor isn't a mistake...
