In response to The saddest scene in Emma?, written by Robyn on October 17, 1997 at 05:04:17

that confrontation is the saddest/ most poignant scene in Emma--in the novel, in the GP film, in the A&E version, as well.

Emma has interfered in others' affairs, she has schemed, she has ridiculed others in her own mind--but until this point, she had really only been naughty, not cruel. We are all hurt when we see her reacting in such a mean way to such a sympathetic character (and the humor in Miss Bates' characterizaion only makes her more sympathetic, to me at least). Poor Miss Bates!

But you are absolutely right: the scene with JN and GP is far and away the most touching. I thought I would cry--and I thought my brute of a husband was going to, too.
