In response to Mr. Woodhouse and Mr. Bennett, written by Carrie on October 10, 1997 at 12:27:09
So I began to consider, of the two, Mr. Woodhouse and Mr. Bennett (a somewhat less involved father) which would be preferred?
It's tempting to choose Mr. Bennet merely becuase Mr. Woodhouse seems such a manipulative fool - but like Harriet, Mr. W isn't so lame as he leads us to believe. He WAS, after all, the first to suspect Frank Churchill of not being All That...
"That young man is very thoughtless. Do not tell his father, but that young man is not quite the thing..." ;-)
But in general, I agree that Mr. Bennet would be a more intellectually-engaging father - if he'd deign to remove himself from his study to the word of the living. Still, Mr. Woodhouse's "Poor ____"'s and "Are you quite warm enough"'s remind me of my own dad... ;-)
