In response to Jane Fairfaxes among other things..., written by Traci P on October 07, 1997 at 00:35:27

Actually the A&E version bothered me a bit. They took out a lot of things (all the riddles, and much of the byplay among Harriet, Mr. Elton and Emma, as well as all of the charades) and they seemed to play up the incestuous aspects of Emma and Knightley's relationship ("I held you in my arms when you were 3 weeks old" YUCK!). I think I tried to ignore that as much as possible when reading the book but the A&E version made that impossible, especially when that lovely line was inserted during the proposal scene!

I agree completely!

Polly Walker as Jane didn't cut it for me...Jane Fairfax smolder? I didn't get that impression from the book...she wasn't very elegant either come to think of it... :)

I loved Polly! Smouldering - you might have something there, and indeed, Polly doesn't have "a slight appearance of ill-health" - but she IS elegant, as is Jane! Please tell me in what way Ms. Walker does NOT fit the following description:

"Her height was pretty, just such as anybody would think tall, and nobody could think very tall; her figure particularly graceful; her size a most becoming medium, between fat and thin...her face, her features - there was more beauty in them all together than she had remembered; it was not regular, but it was a very pleasing beauty. Her eyes, a deep grey, with dark eyelashes and eyebrows, had never been denied their praise...the skin...had a clearness and delicacy which really needed no fuller bloom. It was a style of beauty of which elegance was the reigning character, and as such, she must, in honour, by all her principles, admire it..."

I've always thought that Jane's beauty was striking in a bit of an exotic way, and Walker's clear, slanted eyes and beautiful hair fit the bill for me. Olivia Williams, the A&E Jane, was also wonderful - she's a very similar "type" to Polly's, though she doesn't have the chest.
