In response to Emma vs. Lizzy, written by Elizabeth Rose on October 04, 1997 at 21:49:20

] Ok, here goes:
] I read somewhere (of course I can't remember where!) that while both Emma and Lizzy were clever, Emma was more motivated to better herself (as regards her education). Lizzy would be more likely to pick up a novel (though not one of those silly gothic things!), but Emma would be more inclined to try and read something in a foreign language, or non-fiction about a new topic.
] I was a little puzzled when reading this, as the impression I got was, while not exactly the opposite, certainly different. I see Emma as being rather lax in her education, unless it can win her approbation from everyone (such as her drawing or her music), and certainly having almost all of her time caught up with managing everything and everybody around her. Lizzy I could more readily see applying herself to learning something new, even though she never had the benefit of a governess.
] Any thoughts on this? (sorry for the long post) ;)

I thought Lizzy would be more inclined to apply herself if she decided to and had the means to learn (as opposed to her laxity in practicing at the piano-forte).
Emma wants to do everything JUST well enough to get by. She always seemed to be jealous of Jane Fairfax because Jane was truly accomplished in so many ways.
In short, Lizzy would be truly accomplished in those things she decided to learn, while Emma would do enough to APPEAR accomplished in just about everything.
