From what I've discovered as a student at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Knightly is supposed to be ugly.
] How did you get to that? (not asked in a critical tone, but
] honestly just wondering) The only thing I can find in the
] book is when Emma notices how well looking Mr. Knightley is
] compared to all the other men not dancing at the ball. Is
] this sort of character scheme in some of her other writings
] or am I just oblivious to details when I read?
I don't think this is a normal scheme for JA, because Darcy at least is supposed to be good-looking. I did have the impression that Jeremy Northrop was just a little too good-looking for a Mr. Knightley though...if Knightley were really supposed to be THAT good-looking, how on earth did Emma not realize she was in love with him???
