Yeah, I think Mr. Weston wasn't thinkin' - especially not of insulting anyone. But Mr. Knightley, if I understand his meaning, gleans the irony from the statement which no one else does:

"This explains the sort of clever thing that is wanted, and Mr. Weston has done very well for himself..."

Have you checked the OED for usage dates on both meanings, Traci?
