In response to Thoughtless Tweak..., written by Kali on October 01, 1997 at 17:43:52
] Ah, but there would be the beauty of it...such sweet irony that simple Miss Bates would see the meaning of Emma's thoughtless yet witty remark, and yet Emma doesn't get the tweak in Mr. Weston's equally thoughtless remark? Certainly Mr. Weston wouldn't say something rude on purpose...but the appropriateness of such an inadvertant shot sounds very Austen. Just a thought.
I'm not sure if I'm reading too much into this, but I think it makes a wonderfully ironic reading, and it fits in with the theme of "secrets and things hidden." A conundrum within a conundrum. It is so beautiful that I'd like to think Austen did in fact intend it :) Thanks for the replies.
