In response to Try the 1972 version - it is miles above the rest!, written by Pearl on September 14, 1997 at 19:37:39

] I have watched the 1972 version several times, and it always compares very favorably will the others. [snip] The characters were believable, and some were standouts - Mr. Woodhouse, Miss Bates, and Mrs. Elton made the story come alive. And Mr. Knightly clearly showed the age difference that was supposed to exist between him and EMMA. Well worth your time. Let me know if you agree.

Indeed, Pearl, you will find many fans of the 1972 version (which we call Emma1, by the way). I especially liked Mr Woodhouse, but many of the other actors were very good as well.

I actually like all three versions, for differing reasons. Emma3 (with Kate Beckinsale & Mark Strong) is my personal favorite, but they each have good qualities.
