] Yes, I feel so. He can't bear to take the risk, because the answer means so much to him. My favorite moment in the book is when he tells Emma, that she does not have to give an answer, to tell him it's not "no", to know that he might hope in the future is enough for him (this is a very loose paraphrase). It's so amazing to see reserved and self-posessed Mr Knightley so insecure and so humble. For me it's the most romantic moment in any of JA's books (tied w/ the letter from "Persuasion")
