] ] (3) the generally bold, risk-taking way in which Frank Churchill approaches life.

] ] In expressing this third point, I observe that Mr. Knightley is cautious when it comes to romance ["If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more"]. To me this seems to be the talk of a man with such a strong attachment to hearing the answer 'yes', that he hesitates to ask the question in the first place. This hesitation is understandable in a man who, until moments before, had totally misunderstood where Emma's affections were directed.

] Yes, I feel so. He can't bear to take the risk, because the answer means so much to him. My favorite moment in the book is when he tells Emma, that she does not have to give an answer, to tell him it's not "no", to know that he might hope in the future is enough for him (this is a very loose paraphrase). It's so amazing to see reserved and self-posessed Mr Knightley so insecure and so humble. For me it's the most romantic moment in any of JA's books (tied w/ the letter from "Persuasion")
