] I've always thought of them as sort junior Mr Bennets. They all have rather silly wives, know this, and are far too idle to do a thing about it.

While John Knightley is somewhat like Mr Bennet and Mr Palmer, I like him better than either of the two. He isn't actually rude and obnoxious to his wife, and while both Mrs Bennet and Mrs Palmer irritate me exceedingly, I like Isabella. She always seemed to me a sort of high-born Harriet (anybody else see the similiarities?)
Maybe that's why Emma takes up with Harriet, because she reminds her so much of Isabella.
Granted, Isabella isn't very smart, but not all of us are. She is a good mother and wife, and her limited intelligence is offset by her good qualities. I would not mind chatting with her, but God forbid I have to talk to Mrs Palmer or Mrs Bennet for long!
