] I'm not quite sure what you're arguing here. Why can't "discretion" be used as a subject? This is archaic prose after all. It's just like the "better to have no sense than misapply it as you do" line - Emma has good innate judgement, but regarding Frank, it appears to be dormant.

sorry, i apparently wasn't clear: i'm saying discretion is the subject, but the combination of words was so unfamiliar that i was confused. i, too like laraine's explanation, and it's close to what i was saying, but her twist, of course, is that mr. k was referring to jf. do you still think he could be referring to emma, or that perhaps ja was leaving it open to question?
