Would I be way out of line if I mentioned that I
watched Emma3 again today and really enjoyed it?
I was a complete Emma2 fan (no one can sway
me from adoration of Jeremy) but I was surprised
and delighted at how enjoyable I found Mark
Strong's version...I'm glad now that I watched it
again. And Kate Beckinsdale, who I thought
shrewish and ill-tempered the first time I saw it,
comes off as spirited and independent on a
second look.
What did I learn? (a) The book is still my
favorite, because the movie version that plays
while I read is of my own making; (b) What
you said -- and why I'm posting this here -- is
correct: we get to enjoy Emma from a bunch
of different vantage points and none of them
are without value (although, grimace, I'm still
an Emma2 fan); and (c) Emma1 is still just
terrible, no matter how you look at it!
I'll still adore JN from afar, but rather than think
MS was totally wrong for Mr. Knightley, I am
beginning to think he did it much more justice
than I did him!
