] i'm intrigued by the relatively favorable impression jk seems to have made on you, kathleen and kathy. while he's certainly no wickham, he does seem(i repeat) to be pretty stiff and grumpy, perhaps to mellow into a mr. woodhouse with age. poor isabella! i don't see a very demonstrable love for his children in the book, but i allow the possibility of being mistaken there, if for no other reason than i think you women readers might be more attuned to that than my(old bachelor) self. how do you read the end of ch. 36(which is so cool, btw, esp. emma's little monologue at the end)? jk says simply of his kids, "...do not spoil them, and do not physic them", in contrast to a long list of careful instructions from his wife.
] the more i review the emma characters, the more i think (if i'm honest) that i'm most like jk. his description of the x-mas eve trip is priceless! but here are at least two women that actually like him. that can't be right ;-)

I like Mr JK, but no, I wouldn't want to be married to him. He reminds me of other cynical men I have known who have a biting sense of humor. I don't always approve of what they say, but I frequently find myself laughing at and with them.
I think I see him as growing a bit more like Mr Bennet as he ages, and I have always liked Mr Bennet (even though I don't always admire him).
