greg -- I believe I tend toward your reading of Mr Weston. He seems to me to be a lot like Bingley and Jane Bennet, in that he likes everyone and enjoys company. In fact, the biggest complaint about Mr Weston (from Emma herself) is on "the unmanageable good-will of Mr. Weston's temper" when he decides to join their party with the Elton's party to explore Box Hill.
Mr John Knightley on the other hand is great fun. As long as you weren't the butt of his bad humor, I think his nasty but humorous comments would be very entertaining.
