] Approach-avoidance is a natural human condition, occuring when a person realizes the truth and its potential consequences on at least a subconscious level, and because of/in spite of this knowledge, dithers in proceeding properly.
So, it seems that this is a term that could be applied to most of JA's fully developed characters -- the ones with the most self-awareness, or capacity for self-awareness. [I would exclude the villains like Mrs Elton or Mrs Norris, most of the time anyway.]
