Julia-I agree with you. Emma should have gotten more nominations. The only Oscar nominated movie I saw was TEP, which deserved best pic. I must be the only person alive who hasn't seen Jerry MAcguire.
Now why didn't Emma get more nominations..Had two things going against it, its lighthearted(in a year dominated by TEP phenomenon) and as Kali mentioned, for many Academy voters, it was just another Austen pic. Chick flic.
It's interesting the previous year, many critics picked the smaller-budget Persuasion was named best pic by many major critics, but it didn't get one Oscar nomination. The much overloooked Sophie Thompson was just as brilliant in Persuasion as in Emma2. But-no nominations. Amanda Root was an incredible Anne. But, the big budget S&S(and I love S&S!!) dominated, although notably the only major award it garnered was best screenplay.
The Oscars are all about hype, anyways. Popularity contest. Yawn.
