] In my opinion the actress who played Jane Fairfax in the version of "Emma" with Gwyneth Paltrow (is it Emma2 or 3 ? ) portrayed her a bit too selfassured and made her much more elegant and ladylike than Emma. In comparison, Emma was more like a little girl. (I`m thinking about the scene where Emma is asking Jane about Frank Churchill.) I don`t know if it`s just me, but I pictured Jane Fairfax as a little shy mouse.

I think part of the problem is simply that Polly Walker is about 7 years older than Gwenth Paltrow. Emma and Jane Fairfax are meant to be nearly twins and the casting took away that aspect of the story. So we see Gweneth, who is lovely but with vestiges of adolescent gawkiness still apparent (not many but you can see it sometimes when she moves). While Polly Walker, just as lovely, is much more of a grown woman who has a developed sense of her body, knows what her style, and enough confidence to carry it all through.
