I think the nominations for Best Pic were made with general accessiblity in mind. More people saw and related to Jerry than they did Emma. The same with S&S...the quality of actors, if not better, was better-proven in S&S, and the story was less uniformly light-hearted. And that, for whatever resaon, seems to make a difference. There's also the fact that Austen adaptations - no matter how good they all are - shouldn't and can't dominate the Oscars in a two-year period. I think the general sentiment was that if Emma wasn't as good or better than S&S, it shouldn't take up nomination space that another deserving and more original film should get.
Still, someone...like Sophie Thompson or Juliet Stevenson...should have been nominated for a supporting role Oscar. I think that would have been fair.
