] I have no idea how to spell vicarige. But anyway, remember when Emma visits Jane at the Bates' and Mrs. E. is there (this is after the secret is revealed)? JA says that "There had been a little resentment toward Jane from the vicarige corner" which had ceased. I understand that any resentment toward Jane would cease from the happiness of being "in" on the secret. But what caused this resentment in the first place? Am I making myself at all comprehensible?
Julia, I took it to mean that Mrs. Elton resented the fact that Jane hadn't told her of the engagement. Mrs. Elton kept on insisting that Jane look for a post as governess when Jane knew all along that she was going to marry Frank (at least before the Box Hill incident). BTW, I think it is spelled vicarage. :-)
