] Highbury was a "large" village; and the Woodhouses had "many" acquaintance. Yet, when I counted up the people, I barely got a handful! Am I just too used to Hollywood's "500 closest friends"?

I think there are two reasons for this. One is that Jane only introduced us to those people necessary to the story. The second is that being the 1st family of Highbury the vast majority of the people from Highbury would be beneath them and not part of their daily lives.
