In reading Emma, I've been marking in pink Emma's thoughts and reactions, and in purple various other descriptions of people, and sometimes, I can't tell which is Emma's and which is the narrator's! That further bolsters my opinion that Emma is JA's inner-most "evil" self [see my post on Emma/JA parallels] that she couldn't reveal to many, besides her beloved sister, Cassandra.
