You're right...I read somewhere - perhaps in the same biography Kaf's reading - that Austen stopped working on The Watsons because the issues involved in the story were no longer viable in her own life. She reached a point in her life when she realized that she would probably never marry, let alone marry a rich and prominent man, and so the book and its lessons were no longer pertinent to her life. Must've hurt to think about it, too.
