Was Captain Weston frowned upon as a husband for Miss Churchill because of his being in the militia? And were "redcoats" fair game for flirtation but not marriage? The militia seems like a respectable occupation but Captain Weston was deemed an unsuitable connection by the Churchills. Granted he didn't have a fortune like the Churchills but he did have a "small independence" and likely prospects for the future.
