] Wouldn't this have deeply offended Jane, and prevented any chance of a reconcilliation between Jane and Emma in the future? or was Jane too distracted by other things that day to mark what Emma said when not seeming to flirt with Frank?
] Jane more than any one would be aware of her aunt's ridiculously annoying nature. I dare say that she would have understood Emma's slight if she were paying proper attention.

And we must remember that this comment comes after a long flirtation episode between Emma and FC. Everyone on the Hill is convinced that the two are practically engaged--or are truly engaged and not yet telling anyone yet. I think at that point, JF was so low (mentally and emotionally) that she wouldn't have been thinking of anything but her failed engagement. After Box Hill, Jane goes into a severe physical decline--headaches, crying, being unable to eat anything--and all because of FC; so I doubt that she really heard Emma's comment. She was too self-absorbed (in the best possible way) then.
