On the advice of some old Austen-L posts,--and the fact that I loaned out my book--I bought a cheap copy of Emma, and am now proceeding to mark it up. I can whole-heartedly recommend that practice to anyone. I am paying more attention to everything, and can honestly say that I think I can agree with JA, "I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like." Emma is dreadful! Where she is right once, she errs a hundred times!
I am now thinking how delightful and stimulating it would be to have a group read of Emma, discussing the novel line by line. Forgive me if this has been done before, but I know that there are new people and lurkers who have not put in their two cents' (or shillings') worth. Any takers? If so, how fast should we read?
