] Good question, Kathy. Perhaps so that we won't be so definiteively struck by the idea that Mr. Knightley is jealous when he is later forced to express his disappointment with Frank? Jane meant to leave us clues as to Mr. Knightley's love for Emma, but perhaps she thought that having Mr. Knightley express concern about Elton's affections might be too big of a hint. Especially when considered alongside his negative reaction to Emma's good opinion of Frank Churchill, which comes soon after the Elton debacle.
