] The key here is "SOME doubt of its return"...once she and Knightley connect (i.e., she understands his teachings and worth, and then grows up), there is no going back. They must be married, as Mr. Knightley would have never married Harriet. That fear was all in Emma's overactive mind. Emma's awakening and her union with Mr. Knightley go hand-in-hand.
