I guess I have somewhat of a swayed take on the whole Emma2 vs. Emma3 thing. I saw Emma3 first, then I read the novel, and only recently saw Emma2 on video. The main reason I like Emma3 best is because of Mark Strong. When I saw Emma2, I almost got embarrassed watching JN play the part. He did a lovely job, but the portrayal to me was all wrong. He shows too much obvious pandering to Emma's feelings from the start that it's obvious early on that he's quite gaga about her. For instance, whenever he scolds her, there is always a little smile playing at the corners of his mouth. I especially cringed during the scene when he was talking with Emma and Mrs. Weston about Mrs. Elton's treatment of Jane. He looks so completely muddled by the innuendoes that he runs away. Strong's portrayal on the other hand is of a parental figure, the only one Emma really has. His is such a strong, independent character, uninfluenced by others that when he finally declares his love for Emma, you can finally see that strong character bending in love and in desperation. You finally see what it takes to break through that tough shell. Any woman who can create love in a man like that must feel her worth.
p.s. My brother disagrees with me entirely.
