] So, suppose Emma does end up an old maid? How would she turn out? She wouldn't be poor, but would she be bored out of her mind?

How about Emma as JA? A great occupation for a genteel country woman of some means in those days was a writer-- think JA. And a great subject for her novels would be matching up her heroines and heroes in matrimony! Well, stranger things have happened. If only she developed her talents like Jane Fairfax!

han a facet of Miss Taylor.

I thnk that JA did have a concept of how old Miss Taylor was, which had to be in her mid-30's. Doesn't someone comment when she has her baby that they were gald it went smoothly because she was getting on in years? I think JA knew that Miss Taylor was older, and she served as a kind of mentor-friend for Emma.
