One Year Later
This is my impression of what the Darcys life was like a year on from their marriage, i got my ideas from the end of the Novel.....It is my first time writing, so be kind to me! My next will be better..
Mr. Darcy smiled as he watched the two figures gracefully walking down the path towards the lake. He was entranced by them, and felt compelled to watch their every move. "Georgiana," Elizabeth touched Georgiana's arm and motioned towards the window, "What pleasure do you think your brother derives from spying on us?"
"Well you see, I think he has discovered our plans to run away with the two dashing young highway men, hidden in the woods!" Georgiana said sarcastically.
"Oh Georgiana, how shocking! Well seriously, if he finds us a form of entertainment, I hope our performance is adequate enough, I do not think my acting ability can ever be improved." Both ladies laughed and waved to the window. Mr. Darcy was pleased that his wife and sister seemed to be forming a strong attachment. In the years since he had come of age, he always worried that any marriage might upset Georgiana, or that she may not find his wife agreeable. But, it had been a year since the Darcys were married, and one of the happiest in Fitzwilliam Darcy's life.
"Lizzie, I have been meaning to talk to you." Georgiana sounded serious.
"Well, this does sound serious, what is the problem?" Elizabeth was genuinely concerned.
"Lizzie,I have been thinking, and I have decided that I do not want to visit Pemberley any more. It is too difficult to make these trips from London, and I have decided that I do not wish to travel any more." Georgiana was cut short before she could finish.
" Really? Are you serious. You are not tricking me? I must confess, I am very astonished, I am lost for words." Elizabeth said in a panicked voice.
"Lizzie...." again Georgiana was cut short but this time it was from a messenger on a horse. He was on strict orders to go to Pemberley house, but running on a tight schedule, he decided to deliver it to the Ladies who he had spied from the road.
"Message from Netherfield park madam." he said in a sharp cockney accent, before riding away.
"Yes, thank you. What can this be?" Elizabeth thought. She excused herself from Georgiana for a minute to read the letter. It was from Jane.
Dearest Lizzie,
Do not be alarmed for I do not bring bad news. Actually it is quite the opposite, but I will tell you straight away, without formality. I felt it absolutely necessary to let you know that unbeknown to myself, Charles has made purchased an estate. I can hardly write for my excitement dear Lizzie. I am sure you will be happy too when you hear what estate! It is Hemmingway Park. - " Hemmingway Park, only 30 miles away....oh Jane!" Elizabeth was ecstatic, and she quickly read on.
In any other circumstance I may have found myself rather upset that I was not consulted with, but dear Charles wanted to surprise me, and I must say, he surprised me a great deal!"
I am afraid the main reason we are moving, is mother. I do not wish to sound ungrateful to her , or that I do not love her, but she has imposed herself one too many times at Netherfield. Her almost daily intrusions with Aunt Philips made even Charles a little discontented with our residing here, and you know how he loves Netherfield!. As you can imagine, Mother is inconsolable. If it had not had been for Papa's assurances that our moving would pave the way for another rich man to sweep Kitty, or Mary off of their feet, I am sure she would have decided to move Longbourn closer to Hemmingway!
You will be greatly surprised at how Kitty has changed. Father has done a great favor to her, by not permitting her to see Lydia and Mr. Wickham. Lizzy, she has matured very well, and settled down a great deal. A red coat doesn't even send her into a flutter anymore. I know that you have been so unfortunate to have not seen her for a year due to her staying with Aunt and Uncle Gardiner when you visited. You shall find yourself very pleased with her, I guarantee it!
The end of the page reminds me that I have to go. I have so many things to organize. Please accept an invitation for you, Mr. and Mrs. Darcy to come to a farewell ball at Netherfield on the 27th of next month. I can hardly wait for you to meet your new nephew Thomas! Please agree to spend a week with us. It has been too long since I have seen you Lizzie, almost 3 months!
All my love
Jane Bingley.
"Georgiana! Oh Georgiana, The Bingleys are to have a ball, they are moving closer to Derbyshire, oh I must find your brother, pray excuse me!" Elizabeth turned around and started to run to the house
"Lizzie? " Georgiana was confused with the sudden outburst and a little surprised that she was unable to finish her sentence. She was sure that it would be misunderstood by Elizabeth.
Mr. Darcy who had seen his wife receive the message, had made his way downstairs in time to meet his flustered wife at the front entrance.
"Oh Fitzwilliam, Please read this, I am out of breath!" Elizabeth handed the note to Mr. Darcy.
"This is wonderful news! I am terribly happy! Well I never thought that we would have the pleasure of their company so readily at hand." Mr. Darcy exclaimed after scanning the letter.
"But, I must talk to you about something else Fitzwilliam, something that Georgiana said to me just now. Pray, let us go into the library for it is very important." Mr. Darcy could tell that it was serious, and made his way to the Library before Georgiana reached the house. Elizabeth followed him a little later after excusing herself from Georgiana.
"You are serious? I must say this has taken me quite by surprise" Mr. Darcy stared in disbelief at his wife.
"Yes she related it to me, she does not wish to come to Pemberley any more! Oh please you must talk to her!"
"Aye that I will do...send her in please" Mr. Darcy was already contemplating what to say to his beloved sister. Elizabeth walked out and ushered a waiting Georgiana into the Library.
"You wanted to see me brother?" Georgiana asked as she entered the room. Elizabeth had decided to let the two siblings discuss this without any intrusion, so she excused herself, and walked out to the drawing room.
"Georgie, why do you not wish to visit us any more? Is it because of Elizabeth. I thought that you and her were almost like sisters. Was I wrong to assume that?"
"Oh but you misunderstand me brother. Lizzie did not give me time to explain my true meaning. Aye I failed to say it properly, as I was nervous"
" Pray go on"
" I don't wish to visit Pemberley any more for the sake that I don't wish to be merely a visitor. Oh if only you knew how jealous I get of you and Elizabeth being able to live here at Pemberley . I long every day, to be here amongst the woods and gardens I grew up in. In London I see none of it, I have to put up with the company of ladies, and men who are to put it plainly, more pleased in their own company than in mine. They have no such sparkle and wit about them as you and Elizabeth, and they bore me to death. There is no comfort in Cold, dark streets, crammed with houses. Brother please let me ask you to consider allowing me to stay here. I do hate travelling from London to only spend a little time here." Georgiana was almost in tears as she pleaded.
"You want me to take time to consider your request? Georgiana, although I inherited this home, it is always yours. You know that you did not need to be scared about asking to live here. I would dearly love to have you here and so would Elizabeth! I was considering asking you, but I gained the impression you enjoyed London's delights more!"
"London's delights? Oh no, they are but nothing compared to Pemberley ! I only pretended, in order to make you happy. But you will let me stay! Oh I love you so much Fitzwilliam, you and Lizzie!!!!" Georgiana exclaimed. She embraced her brother and started to cry.
" I am afraid that if you do not fetch Elizabeth, she will work herself up into a very distraught state! Quick, save her from her misery!!!!" Mr. Darcy laughed .
Elizabeth expressed as much joy as Mr. Darcy when she heard that Georgiana was to live there for good.
"Oh thank the lord. I was so desperately afraid that you would forever think of me as the main force driving you away from Pemberley !We shall have such happy days together, you , your brother and I!" Elizabeth warmly hugged Georgiana and the two ladies started to discuss the Bingley's moving to Hemmingway Park, and the impending ball.
Georgiana's moving back to Pemberley was the main focus for the Darcys over the next few weeks which allowed them the luxury of not having to pine for Netherfield ball for too long.
the end
