Okay, let's start with the good.
I correctly predicted two of the designers who made it through to Fashion Week - I thought Dom and Bradon's avant-garde looks were very clearly *their* work. Both were very artistic and sculptural in some ways, but Dom's was more restrained and refined yet still really powerful - the print combination worked because they were in the same color family. Bradon's piece, unfortunately, looked a little bit like a Chihuly caught sideways - I think if he had not pasted on so many of the noodles it would have had more appeal, but you could see that he eventually put a lot of thought into the overall impression.
As for Dom and Bradon's "Make it Work" makeovers of losing designs (interesting twist, I kind of liked it), I agreed that Dom did the best job with hers. The mix of prints on the sleeves was pretty neat, and I liked turning the jacket into a vest. Bradon's looked kind of like a waitress.
As for the other three. Man oh man. Alexandria continues to make "garments" (if you can even call them that) which look like she put fabric through a garbage disposal and then slapped it onto a dress form. Finally, though, we got to see that Heidi is really the only one standing up for her, even though that doesn't really matter - Heidi seems to get more than one vote. Alexandria's rework was okay, not great. Adding leather to the pants was a smart move, but overall it didn't go together.
Helen used the same technique she's used on maybe 5 dresses this season (didn't she take inspiration from a dead moth at the glampsite and create a torn-edge chiffon gown??) and it was definitely not avant-garde. I have not responded to her work this season, but I actually think if she had kept that cocoon cloak with the leather accents that Tim didn't like, she'd have been put through as the third Fashion Week contestant. And what the heck was Zac Posen swooning over with her makeover of Kate's dress??? That was ridiculous! It had absolutely nothing to do with Kate's original design! Helen didn't use the print at all, and it was a boring skirt and cropped top that looked exactly like the crop top she made for her textile challenge, and was what Miranda kept making over and over again! Everyone's having serious memory lapses this week...
But it all comes down to Justin. His look this week was very beautiful - it looked a bit like Bradon's, if Bradon had had a better editing eye, and the piping technique was awesome. He's not a great seamstress, but I have liked his work overall. It seemed highly contrived to me that he would choose to makeover his own losing look, although he did do a very good job of updating it. I do honestly believe that the producers are very consciously making him the underdog (especially now that he has effectively come out as a deaf gay man - extra heartstring-tugging) and, if it weren't for Heidi's girl-crush on Alexandria, I would say Justin was being groomed for the win.
