The Sapphires is about four Aboriginal girls who form a singing group and entertain the troops in 1968 Vietnam. It's a great story covering all the emotions of hope, loss, self-awareness, family, etc. Their manager is played by Chris O'Dowd and he is just a hoot. He has his failings and isn't always the ideal person, but you can't help liking him anyway.
According to the DVD extras, this is based on a true story, which I somewhat guessed while watching it. I didn't think anyone could be clever enough to come up with this story. The director is the son of one of the singers.
I found this film while searching desperately through the lovefilm.com selections looking for something different. It's worth a viewing if you are looking for something different. Has anyone else seen it?
