Your post is really thought provoking! I've read it numerous times and did have a few points in reply. You wrote:

I do believe it was their choice to remain in their own home. It wasn't exactly discussed but in light of the conversation she had with her husband regarding getting an au pair, I think they were trying to keep their life much as it had been prior to her becoming PM.
However, I think the writers really botched this relationship. The idea that a couple who seem so in love and happy would let their marriage blow up rather than get some simple help is ridiculous. They could easily afford help or as you say they could have moved into Marionborg. There was no implication that she wasn't allowed to live there. Philip could get the type of work he desires.
Their career trade was actually a 5 year plan - 5 for her, 5 for him. When she becomes PM it is around the time that he was to have his 5 years.
I live in the US and know little about parliamentary government so I find the political aspect very interesting. I suppose there could be more depth but compared to other political dramas here I find it much more complex and nuanced.
A major theme certainly is centered around women in high powered jobs having messed up personal lives though. Birgitte, Katrine and Hanne are all highly ambitious and committed to their careers. Yet all 3 are having trouble in their personal lives. I think it could be done a little less stereotypically.
But even though there are a few things I would like changed I think it is a very engaging series.
I am on Season 2 and I wish Season 3 was available on DVD !
